The Amazing Race The 10 Most Boring Detours, Ranked | ScreenRant
There’s are several reasons why The Amazing Race is one of the longest-running reality shows of all time (it’s got 32 seasons, so far). For starters, this the only show where filming always takes place around and teams race for $1 million. And during the entire race, the teams would also encounter various twists that have kept the game interesting.
Among these twists would be the Detours, which teams must complete successfully together to be able to advance in the race. And while some Detours truly have truly tested the teams’ physical and mental abilities, others are just boring.
10 Being A Tourist
Back in Season 26, the remaining teams flew all the way to Bangkok, Thailand where they had to choose between the Detours called Wheel or Water. Water involves cruising along the Chao Phraya River so that teams can make their way to the Wat Klang Food Market.
Here, they had to eat some century eggs before making their way to another venue to take part in a traditional Thai prayer. While it may have been nice for the teams, for viewers, it wasn't very thrilling.
9 Setting Up A Campsite
In some ways, Detours are great to have on the show since we get a better glimpse of the team’s dynamic as they do their best to work together to accomplish a task. However, the downside to a Detour is that there are always two options presented at any given time.
Because of this, the team can always choose the more boring task of the two. In Season 28, the more boring Detour involved setting up a campsite while at Mont Blanc. Clearly, all anyone needed was previous camping experience to get this done.
8 Mail Delivery
During one leg in Season 30, contestants quickly realize that they had to keep on racing after arriving at a Pit Stop in Zimbabwe. During this non-stop leg, the teams encountered a Detour where they were given the option to deliver some mail.
And while the task appeared to be relatively easier than the other Detour, it still slowed eventual race winners Cody Lee Nickson and Jessica Furtado Graf enough to almost become the eliminated team. Fortunately, these contestants, who are also previous Big Brother winners, got really lucky.
7 Operating A Candelabrum
At one point during the show’s Season 27, the remaining teams got to participate in some wedding festivities. In fact, one of the Detours required them to work on a portable generator so that it could be used to power up a candelabrum.
Once that was done, they also had to carry the candelabrum and participate in a wedding procession where the groom is escorted while making his way to his wedding party. The moment the groom was able to meet with his bride, the teams received their next clue. There just wasn't much action to it.
6 Solving A Slide Puzzle
Puzzles always make for a great mental challenge. However, a slide puzzle is absolutely not one of the most creative types of Detour that we’ve seen on the show so far.
While visiting Copacabana, teams had a choice between playing footvolley or working on a puzzle. As viewers may have expected, several teams opted to do this challenge instead. And while the challenge didn’t really offer much excitement, it must also be noted that one of the teams who chose this Detour ended up getting eliminated.
5 Glamming Up A Cow
In some cases, Detours almost serve as a brief break from the race for teams. Case in point was the Detour offered in season 31 while they remained in Switzerland. In one of the Detours, the team had to attend and participate in a cow festival.
For their part, they had to make a beautiful floral head dressing and put it on their chosen cow. Once this is done, they also had to lead the cow through the festival. Once they accomplished this, the teams received their next clue. Certainly not a winning task.
4 Cooking A Meal
During the most recent season of The Amazing Race, the team traveled to Brazil where they were asked to purchase certain items from the market before being introduced to their Detour options. One of these choices involved preparing a meal using ingredients they had previously purchased and brought along with them.
And while they lacked the convenience of cooking the food in a conventional kitchen, the challenge still proved easy enough for teams who had chosen this Detour. In fact, many of them accomplished this task pretty quickly.
3 Collecting Fireworks
During the show’s season 29, there was a time when teams were given a Detour option of searching for fire trolls and collecting six fireworks. Once they had all the fireworks needed, they presented them to learn the location of their next Pit Stop.
Granted, fans know that this task came with its challenges since the teams had to run around in search of trolls and fireworks but overall, it still felt boring compared to other Detours presented on the show. Also, this is a kind of Detour that allowed for teams to work together, making the challenge easier.
2 Memorizing Water Basins
In Season 31, the remaining teams found themselves in Switzerland where they were asked to choose between two Detours called Water Power and Water Down. In Water Power, teams were asked to ride the steepest funicular train in the world. During the ride, they had to memorize the names of eight water basins and the amount of water that they are able to hold.
After the ride, they made their way to a hydroelectric dam where they had to match the names of the basin with the correct water capacity level. Not the most thrilling of tasks.
1 Food Delivery
If teams in a previous season did mail delivery, teams participating in the show’s most recent season were given the option to do some food delivery for an app service while they were in India.
This really isn’t the most interesting thing to see play out on TV, though, of course, food delivery services are a crucial part of many viewers every day lives, for which they are immensely thankful.
