Pretty Little Liars: 10 Greatest Betrayals, Ranked | ScreenRant

A teen drama is the perfect genre for characters to betray each other. On Pretty Little Liarssecrets are currency and keep the plot moving along quickly. Alison DiLaurentis is hiding the biggest thing of all from her friends, but everyone in Rosewood is fighting their own battle. In addition to having to the looming threat of A, the liars have to contend with drama in their academic, romantic, and home lives.

Throughout all seven seasons, the characters hurt each other, whether on purpose or by accident, and while some of these can be easily explained, other decisions have far-reaching consequences.

10 When Spencer Kissed Melissa's Partner Wren

Melissa's older sister Melissa was smart and hardworking. She always had an active love life and when fans first met her, she was dating Wren. He and Spencer shared a romantic moment and a kiss, which later felt strange and creepy since he was Alex Drake's love interest. This, of course, hurt Melissa, who couldn't believe that her own sister would do this to her.

Alas, this is hardly PLL's biggest betrayal because Melissa wasn't very nice to Spencer and she was always so conceited that it was hard to feel sympathy for her. Melissa also did some terrible things to Spencer, like saying nice things about the renovation that Spencer did on the barn and then stealing it for herself.

9 When Byron Had An Affair

A lot went down in season 1 of Pretty Little Liars, and right away, viewers learned that Aria's family wasn't as happy as they appeared.

Aria's father Byron cheated on her mother Ella with Meredith, a young teacher at Hollis, and this was the ultimate betrayal that a family could go through. Aria grappled with it for quite some time and at first, it was a secret that only she knew about. Though Ella did eventually find out and the impact wasn't felt for the entire series,  it was still powerful.

8 When Spencer Realized She Loved Caleb

Spencer was a good friend to everyone and that's why it was so shocking that she would even think that she could date Caleb, Hanna's ex-boyfriend and the person who fans knew she would end up with.

Spencer realized that she loved Caleb, even though he was probably the last person she should date, and she went with her heart. Ultimately, though, this wasn't the world's biggest betrayal because Hanna said it was alright if they started a relationship.

7 When Aria Worked With A.D.

In the final season, Aria joined A.D. in making the liars' lives totally miserable. Some fans wanted Aria to be A.D. so this was an exciting and entertaining point in the series.

Aria was a big help to this mysterious figure and got a lot of information for them. She also did A.D.'s dirty work, like ruining the nursery that Ali set up for her babies. This was a huge betrayal as Aria was supposed to be on her friends' side, not against them. She ended up doing all of this to help Ezra, but it still seemed like a terrible way to act.

6 When A Implanted Emily's Eggs In Ali

Ali became a mother but she got pregnant in a disturbing way: A took the eggs that Emily donated and literally implanted them in Ali's body.

This was a massive betrayal of trust on so many levels and not the way that Ali thought she would start her family. In the end, though, Ali loved her babies and was thrilled to start her new life with Emily by her side.

5 When Toby Joined The A-Team

Toby became an A-Team member to help protect Spencer and the other main characters.

Even though he said that he had a good reason to do so, he still joined a horrible group of people, and it was hard for fans to wrap their heads around this revelation. It felt like a huge betrayal because Toby was getting involved with something that Spencer didn't want him to. He could have helped her in other ways, and this seemed like the wrong move to make.

4 When Melissa Kept A Huge Secret From Spencer

This betrayal took place in season 5's "No One Here Can Love or Understand Me." In a video, Melissa shared a massive secret with Spencer that she should have explained so many years earlier.

PLL fans know that someone buried Bethany Young when she wasn't dead. It turns out Melissa is the guilty party. She believed that she was helping Spencer, whom she assumed murdered Alison, as she witnessed Spencer holding a shovel. Spencer and viewers alike were shocked. It was not only bad enough that Melissa kept a secret from her own family, but it was information that all of the liars needed to have.

3 When Mona Was The First A Who Tormented The Liars

Mona hated that Ali bullied her for such a long time, but even though Hanna was part of Ali's social circle, Hanna and Mona became good friends when Ali disappeared.

Mona betrayed Hanna and the rest of the main characters by becoming the first A on the show. This is a deep betrayal because Mona acted in horrible ways and caused everyone so much pain. It was hard to trust her after this, even though it's possible to see her as a strong yet insecure person who isn't 100 percent evil.

2 When Aria Learned That Ezra Dated Ali

Aria and Ezra's love story caused many problems and it seemed like every season, Aria learned something new about her love interest that she would have preferred not to.

When Aria learned that Ali and Ezra used to date, it was a betrayal, especially since Ezra should have told her about this at the beginning of their relationship. This was definitely necessary information. Since Aria loved Ezra and thought he was her endgame, this is an epic betrayal, as it made Aria rethink all that she knew about him.

1 When Aria Thought Ezra Was A

Ezra joined the A-Team and wanted to write about Ali, but at first, Aria and her friends thought they had discovered a big secret: that Ezra was actually A.

Even though this was a bit of a red herring, it's still possible to view it as a major red flag. Aria didn't deserve for someone whom she cared about to get involved in A's dangerous game, and Ezra should have been a better partner. All the explanations in the world couldn't take away how weird and confusing this reveal was.
