Game Of Thrones: 5 Duos That Broke Our Hearts (& 5 That Lifted Them)
Game of Thrones was a television series with one of the largest casts of characters imaginable, and it took place over different regions and continents of its fictional world. As a result, many different characters developed relationships in surprising and unexpected ways.
Some of the duos that developed throughout the course of the series were some of the few bright spots in this incredibly grim world, while others lived up to the misery and pain that fans had come to expect from Game of Thrones.
10 Broke Our Hearts: Sansa & Ramsay

Sansa didn't have the easiest go of things from season 1 of Game of Thrones, but when it became readily apparent that Petyr Baelish was about to hand Sansa over to House Bolton so that she could be married to Ramsay, viewers were crushed.
Sansa may not have known what horrors were awaiting her with such a husband, but fans sure did, and it was nightmarish to see Sansa tossed into the hands of the worst character in the series.
9 Lifted Them: Daenerys & Jorah

The genesis of Daenerys and Jorah's relationship was obviously shady, but as soon as Jorah began to see Dany for who she could be, he became her number one fan.
Although watching Dany lose one of the few people she could rely on and trust completely was heartbreaking, it's impossible to deny that Jorah and Daenerys truly brought out the best in each other and had one of the best and purest relationships in the show.
8 Broke Our Hearts: Jaime & Cersei

Cersei and Jaime's relationship was heartbreaking in more ways than one. On the one hand, it was clear that despite all their faults, they truly loved each other.
But on the other, it seemed like Jaime spent much of his character arc searching for redemption while Cersei only got worse over time, so many fans were infuriated that at the very end Jaime still chose to return to Cersei and die with her in one of the weakest deaths in the show's history.
7 Lifted Them: Sansa & Jon

The Starks are the only family that seemed like a truly close and loving one at the beginning of Game of Thrones, and although they all split up at the very start, fans were eagerly awaiting the moment where at least one Stark would reunite with another.
And while it took years, the Stark reunion was anything but a letdown, as the moment that Jon and Sansa saw each other again was one of the most heartwarming in the series, and the brother-sister duo kept kicking ass every moment afterward.
6 Broke Our Hearts: Tyrion & Varys

Genuine friendships are something of a rarity in Westeros, and although Tyrion and Varys were both manipulative and sneaky, the connection that they shared was obvious and their friendship was incredibly real.
Varys saved Tyrion's life because he recognized the value in his political mind, so it was crushing to see that Tyrion betrayed his friend in service of his queen. And of course, it was even more brutal when it became clear that Varys was actually right about Daenerys needing to be stopped no matter the cost.
5 Lifted Them: Jon & Sam

Game of Thrones is an incredibly grim fantasy world where most people are just looking out for themselves and are willing to betray or manipulate whoever they need to in order to survive or thrive.
Jon Snow and Sam Tarly's relationship was an incredibly welcome reprieve from this standard, as they had arguably the purest and truest friendship in the entire show. They had each other's backs from the moment they met, and they embodied the brotherhood that the Night's Watch was supposed to represent.
4 Broke Our Hearts: Catelyn & Robb

In the early years of the show, most of the surviving Starks are helpless children who can't really do anything to change or escape their own situation, but one of the most heartwarming driving forces behind the story was Catelyn and Robb.
They were the last Starks with any real power in the world, and they used that power to fight for their family and avenge Ned. Sadly, their fight was for nothing, and they were brutally slaughtered in the most shocking twist in the series.
3 Lifted Them: Jaime & Brienne

Jaime and Brienne were one of the oddest couples in the early years of Game of Thrones, but over time they came to see each other for who they really were, and became one of the best duos in the show.
Brienne was everything that a true knight should be despite not being a knight, and she brought out the best in Jaime. Jaime also learned to see beyond Brienne's surface and helped her become the respected and honored knight she should have been all along.
2 Broke Our Hearts: Jon & Daenerys

Fans of the series had been anticipating the moment that Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen would meet from the very beginning, and at first, it seemed like they would become everything everyone had hoped they would be.
But tragically, it seems like Jon and Dany actually brought out the absolute worst in each other, as Jon's parentage at least partially triggered Dany's descent to villainy and Jon became everything he didn't want to be when he joined Daenerys but then ultimately killed her.
1 Lifted Them: Sansa & Theon

Many of the duos that found their way to each other in Game of Thrones seemed out of left field, but the most surprising and heartwarming pair was undoubtedly Sansa and Theon.
Theon and Sansa were both taken to the depths of despair by Ramsay Bolton, but after enduring that suffering they teamed up and saved each other in more ways than one. Theon and Sansa truly had one of the best relationships in the series.
