10 Superbad (88%)
It might be the perfect teen comedy. Hitting theaters in 2007 and grossing $170.8 million, Superbad had everything that its target audience was looking for. Laugh out loud scenes, absurd scenarios, raunchy moments, and lines that could be quoted consistently over a decade later.
Telling the story of two high school friends (Jonah Hill and Michael Cera) out to party one night before college only for things to get way out of hand, this was a massive success. Superbad helped boost the careers of its stars while also marking the film debut of future Oscar winner Emma Stone.
9 Bolt (89%)
Thanks to the sheer dominance of Pixar, it seems like some of the releases by Walt Disney Animation Studios flew under the radar. Although Bolt did gross $310 million in 2008 and scored some very impressive reviews, it's not held in the kind of high esteem as similar films.
Bolt focuses on the titular dog, who plays a superhero on television and embarks on an adventure to rescue his human owner, who he believes was kidnapped. Although it hit some expected tropes, it was boosted by fantastic visuals and some very likable characters.
8 The Father Of My Children (90%)
The first foreign language film on this list comes from France. Premiering in 2009 at the Cannes Film Festival, The Father of My Children won the Jury Special Prize at the event. It is partially based on the life of the late Humbert Balsan, the chairman of the European Film Academy.
The film was praised for the way that it told a tragic story uplifted by a few key moments of joy sprinkled in throughout. It wasn't a box office hit and it didn't win major awards but it remains one of the more underrated flicks from the decade.
7 The Messenger (90%)
First being shown at the Sundance Film Festival in 2009, The Messenger won over the hearts of most audience members who checked it out. This war drama centers on a soldier who becomes entangled with the widow of a former officer.
The film flopped at the box office but critics seemed to love it. Along with the positive reviews, The Messenger was nominated for Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars and was up for several Independent Film Awards. Woody Harrelson and Ben Foster were both acclaimed for their performances.
6 District 9 (90%)
When it hit theaters in 2009, District 9 ended up being one of those groundbreaking sci-fi flicks that come around every so often. It all began with a viral marketing campaign at Comic-Con and led to one of the more unique takes on the found footage genre.
District 9 takes place in a world where aliens are forced to live in harsh conditions on Earth. A government agent exposed to their technology ends up bonding and empathizing with them. This movie helped make Sharlto Copley into a star and was nominated for several Oscars.
5 Bloody Sunday (92%)
Paul Greengrass has become one of the most impressive directors in all of Hollywood. He's helmed films like United 93, The Bourne Ultimatum, and Captain Phillips. However, the first one to truly catch the eyes of critics and audiences was 2002's Bloody Sunday.
This British-Irish film dramatizes the Irish civil rights protest from 1972 and the tragic massacre that followed. Bloody Sunday was so well-received that it tied with the legendary Spirited Away for the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival.
4 The Host (93%)
These days, it seems like everyone is talking about Bong Joon-ho. The acclaimed filmmaker dominated the 2020 Academy Awards with Parasite, winning Best Director and Best Original Screenplay, while also making history as the first non-English film to win Best Picture.
His career before Parasite is impressive with one of his best works being The Host. Released in 2006, the story sees a monster emerge from the Han River in Seoul. The final entry is another foreign language picture. Based on a 2004 novel of the same name, Let The Right One In is a Swedish horror film that spawned an American remake a few years later. That version also got strong reviews but the 2008 original is a modern classic.
Let The Right One In focuses on a young boy who gets bullied often and forms a friendship with a vampire child. Praised for intelligent storytelling, quality acting, and surprisingly strong scares, this took home several awards for Best Foreign Language Film.
