5 TV Show Brothers Who Had A Horrible Relationship (& 5 Who Loved Each Other)

No relationships are as profound, complicated, and impactful as the ones among family members. That's why they make for compelling TV show material! Brothers from TV shows all care about one another in some way, even if it's toxic and complicated. Almost never do they feel indifferent. The deeper the love, the deeper the hate, they say.

Some characters take the frustrations they feel towards their brothers and turn them into a building block of their identity. There are also TV brothers who would do anything for each other and genuinely enjoy each other's company, though. They know each other better than anybody else and share amazing on-screen chemistry.

10 Horrible: Gob & Michael (Arrested Development)

Considering the fact that GOB is one of the worst sitcom brothers of all time, it's a real surprise that these two even get along in their own goofy way. GOB shamelessly called Michael the least likable member of the family and shoved forget-me-now pills down his throat.

Unlike GOB, Michael is a responsible man, but that doesn't make him a great brother. He went after Marta, GOB's girlfriend, and he never fought against Lucille's obvious mistreatment of GOB.

9 Wholesome: Will & Jonathan (Stranger Things)

Since they couldn't rely on their parents, Will and Jonathan formed a really strong brotherly bond. Jonathan took care of Will as if he was his own son and comforted him when he was afraid.

For example, he made him a mixtape of his favorite songs, so he could listen to it when the fighting got too loud. He also made him breakfast and provided guidance when nobody else could.

8 Horrible: Damon & Stefan (The Vampire Diaries)

Even though there is no doubt Stefan and Damon Salvatore loved each other deep down, that didn't stop them from acting vile towards one another. From the moment Damon appeared in the pilot episode, it was clear he meant trouble. Damon pursued Stefan's girlfriend Elena, urged his kind brother to give in to his lust for blood, and killed his beloved friend Lexi.

Stefan was undoubtedly the better brother. He almost committed fratricide when he poisoned Damon with vervain, but then again, he didn't really have much of a choice. As the seasons progressed, they did manage to mend their relationship, but no amount of brotherly love could undo the atrocities of the past.

7 Wholesome: Barney & James (How I Met Your Mother)

One of Barney's best story arcs is him reuniting with his older brother James. It turned out they have a lot in common: they are both masters of one-night stands, they love to suit up, and they both enjoy Laser Tag.

Even though James only appeared in fourteen episodes, his scenes completely overshadowed those with other How I Met Your Mother characters. They had chemistry like no other pair of siblings in the show and they were best men at each other's weddings.

6 Horrible: Reese & Malcolm (Malcolm In The Middle)

The animosity among the young Wilkerson brothers was horrible in a good way: it was incredibly entertaining to watch. Malcolm looked down on Reese because he was clearly not as intelligent as Malcolm, but that didn't mean he avoided Reese's pranks and bullying. They were both horrible to Dewey, but they were never as mean to him as they were to one another.

The beautiful thing about their dysfunctional relationship is that they always worked together when their furious mother wanted to punish them. In those times, they turned to their older brother for wisdom.

5 Wholesome: Michael & Lincoln (Prison Break)

Many say that they would do anything for their brothers. But would they get themselves arrested and plan an elaborate escape from prison to save their brother from death row? It sounds impossible, right? Not to Michael Scofield, it doesn't.

Prison Break's Michael had a nice life going for himself and he wasn't even that close to Linc before he was arrested. He remembered that Lincoln always took care of him when he was a boy, so he figured it was time for him to return the favor.

4 Horrible: Rollo & Ragnar (Vikings)

The first episode of Vikings opens up with Ragnar and Rollo embracing after a battle, but it isn't long until cracks start showing in their relationship. It turned out that Rollo hated living in Ragnar's shadow and that he was in love with his wife, Lagertha.

Rollo eventually betrayed the Norsemen and went to live in Paris. Ragnar despised him for it, as did Bjorn and the rest of the family. Both were clearly hurting from their disputes, but they were too proud and stubborn to make amends.

3 Wholesome: Tyrion & Jaime (Game Of Thrones)

As soon as he was born, Tyrion was hated by everybody, except for his older brother Jaime. "If it wasn't for you, I wouldn't have survived my childhood," Tyrion told him. They are by far the best Lannisters. Because their strengths lied in different areas of life, they didn't share the screen often enough.

When they did, though, it was pure magic. They shared a similar sense of humor which they didn't abandon even in the direst circumstances. Jaime made jokes even though he just lost his hand and Tyrion managed to be funny even when he was arrested.

2 Horrible: Chuck & Jimmy (Better Call Saul)

No tale of two brothers is as tragic as Chuck and Jimmy's from Better Call Saul. Jimmy was a good-for-nothing who had a habit of scheming people, while his older brother Chuck was a filthy rich lawyer. Even though Jimmy did his best to turn his life around and worked tirelessly in the mailroom of Chuck's law firm, the skeptical brother refused to believe in him.

Chuck wanted to hold Jimmy accountable for his actions, which eventually led them to court. After the final showdown, defeated Chuck committed suicide by setting his house on fire.

1 Wholesome: Sam & Dean (Supernatural)

The Winchester brothers are the heart of Supernatural. As a big brother, Dean always felt protective of Sam. Nothing would stop him from helping him or saving his life, neither law nor death. He even sold his soul to the devil! Even though they clearly had a codependent and somewhat strained relationship, they always had each other's backs. Together, they were such a formidable force that they were once called "denim-wrapped nightmares".

What makes no sense about them, though, is that as time progressed, they grew less and less playful and open with one another. They used to love pranks, but it seems that their profession hardened their hearts a little. No wonder - they suffered tremendous loss in life.
