The Vampire Diaries focused on love triangles, vampire brothers, ancient curses, and doppelgangers, but that doesn't mean that it lacked heartwarming moments along the way. One of the parts of the show that kept fans interested was the complexity of the characters. Even those who had supernatural abilities had their human moments that warmed fans' hearts.
Throughout the series, viewers were surprised by how often the show tugged at their heartstrings with sweet moments between the characters. However, only certain ones stand out the most.
10 Bonnie Showing Elena Her Powers (S1 Ep8)
When Bonnie discovers she is a witch, she immediately tells Elena - despite her grandmother's wishes. Her excitement and preparation to show Elena her powers are adorable. It is so sweet that Bonnie wants to share everything with her best friend and does so without any fear that Elena will not accept her newfound powers as a witch.
As Bonnie makes the feathers from Elena's pillow float around, Elena's amazement and shock are so joyful and accepting. It is one of the few moments in the series fans get to see Elena and Bonnie just be purely happy and excited, with no negative consequences looming over them.
9 Elena, Stefan, and Bonnie Visiting Caroline (S2 Ep13)
In the second season of The Vampire Diaries, Caroline heroically decides to help Tyler with him accepting the reality of being a werewolf. Her trust is betrayed when Tyler stands by as other werewolves torture and almost kill her. She puts on a brave face when Stefan drops her home later after she is rescued, but Stefan knows that she is really hurt by what happened.
He takes it into his own hands to get Elena and Bonnie and bring them to comfort Caroline. It is such a wholesome moment that reminds viewers that Caroline, Bonnie, and Elena are still just teenagers. Them coming over to have a sleepover to help their best friend who is hurting is such a heartwarming moment that fans loved to see.
8 Alaric Naming Elizabeth After Caroline's Mom (S7 Ep13)
Liz Forbes death was one of the saddest moments on The Vampire Diaries. What made it really hit viewers hard was the fact that it was completely natural and there was nothing Caroline could have done to stop it. When Caroline gives birth to Alaric's twin daughters later on in the series, she is touched that he decides to name one Elizabeth after Caroline's mom.
This is such a great scene because Caroline gets to have her mother's memory live on through Alaric's daughters, something she never thought she would be able to do since she is a vampire. It is such a beautiful moment that begins to signify the connection Alaric and Caroline have later on in the series when they decide to raise the twins together.
7 Caroline's 18th Birthday (S3 Ep11)
Caroline becoming a vampire was actually one of the best things to happen to her character. She grows more confident, stronger, and self-assured after turning. However, when her 18th birthday comes around, she is left feeling down since she is technically a seventeen-year-old and will never get to truly experience these big birthday milestones.
To make her feel better, Elena, Bonnie, and Matt rally together to make her birthday special. Despite it being held in a cemetery, a funeral for Caroline's past self was the perfect way to celebrate her birthday. It showed Caroline getting a truly new beginning as her more confident self and leaving behind those past insecurities and doubts she had when she was human.
6 Alaric Proposes to Jo (S6 Ep15)
Alaric's luck with his love life is definitely not great. The Vampire Diaries fans felt bad for Alaric when his first wife left him to be a vampire and Aunt Jenna died before their relationship could get even more serious. That is why him falling for Jo is such well-deserved happiness for him. When Jo discovers that she is pregnant, without a second thought, Alaric proposes.
It is such a sweet moment and Alaric confessing how much he loves Jo really hit viewers in their hearts. Them not wanting to waste time and just being together is the spontaneity that viewers didn't get to see in the romantic relationships throughout the show. Despite their relationship ending with Jo's death, this moment remains one of the most special and heartwarming moments throughout the entire show.
5 Caroline and Stefan's Wedding (S8 Ep15)
Despite their wedding getting moved up to be a trap for Katherine, Stefan and Caroline's wedding was a moment of happiness and sweetness in the final season of the show. Caroline had joked in the first season that she and Stefan would have a June wedding when he first gets to Mystic Falls. It was cute to see that actually come true.
Stefan and Caroline's vows were beautiful and it was clear that they were completely in love with each other. At that moment, viewers and the couple forgot about the evil looming over the town and just focused on their love.
4 Damon Seeing Bonnie After Her Breaking Free From The Prison World (S6 Ep15)
Damon and Bonnie's close bond was one friendship in The Vampire Diaries that no one saw coming. When Damon gets out of the Prison World and Bonnie doesn't, it weighs on him for most of the sixth season. When he walks into his kitchen one day and sees Bonnie, it is such a beautiful moment that proved they cared about each other immensely.
Damon and Bonnie even getting along was something that fans never expected to see, so seeing Bonnie run into Damon's arms when she makes it out of the Prison World gave fans chills. It is definitely one of the sweetest moments and one of the most wholesome in their relationship and in the entire series.
3 Stefan Reuniting With Lexi In The After Life (S8 Ep16)
Lexi was always by Stefan's side, even when he was recovering from his Ripper days. Their friendship was enviable from their first episode together and it was clear that Stefan always saw Lexi as his best friend. Their pure and loveable connection made it was fitting that Lexi was the first person who greets Stefan after he dies.
She helped him countless times in life and of course, and she would be the one Stefan begins his journey in the afterlife with. After Stefan's selfless sacrifice in The Vampire Diaries' series finale, it was beautiful to see him rewarded by having him reunite with Lexi. It was great for viewers to know that while Stefan waits for the rest of his loved ones, he had Lexi by his side.
2 Damon Finding Peace With Stefan (S8 Ep16)
After Damon gets turned back into a human in the series finale, he believes that he will go to hell once he dies because of all of the pain he caused while a vampire. Elena writes in her diary about him being scared that he won't be reunited with Stefan in death, which makes their reunion very touching.
Despite what they have been through, the fact that their idea of peace is them being together is beautiful. It was the perfect ending to their stories since fans had seen how much they grew since the pilot. When Stefan says "Hello brother," it mirrors Damon saying it to him in the pilot, but this time it is full of love rather than hate, bringing their relationship and The Vampire Diaries full circle.
1 Elena Reuniting With Her Family In The Afterlife (S8 Ep16)
Elena really goes through it throughout the series. She loses countless family members to supernatural means and her parents die even before the series begins. Elena's face, when she sees her family welcoming her to heaven, is definitely the most heartwarming moment of the entire series.
Despite fans not always loving Elena's character throughout the series, it is undeniable that she deserved to find peace after the life she lived. Knowing that she finally gets to be at peace with her parents, Aunt Jenna and Uncle John is a beautiful way to end her story on the show.
