No Way Home’s Most Popular X-Men Theory Is Ridiculous Enough To Work
Spider-Man: No Way Home brings the Multiverse to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it may have a wild connection to X-Men as well. In No Way Home, Peter Parker (Tom Holland) can't handle the world knowing that he's secretly Spider-Man, so he turns to Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) for help. But, unfortunately, Doctor Strange's memory wipe spell goes horribly wrong, opening a hole in the Multiverse. Now, various Spider-Man villains, such as Alfred Molina's Doc Ock, are entering the MCU, and it's up to Peter Parker and Doctor Strange to stop them.
Two decades on, 2000's X-Men has stood the test of time. The film, which helped bring several fan-favorite Marvel characters to the big screen, was a critically-acclaimed box office success, earning nearly $300 million worldwide. Its star power speaks for itself. Patrick Stewart took on Professor Charles Xavier, Ian McKellen played Magneto, and Halle Berry gave audiences her take on Storm. Additionally, the movie introduced audiences to Hugh Jackman's Wolverine, launching the actor's career to new heights. Fox later delivered several successful follow-ups in the franchise, but they never would've been possible without X-Men's success.
A wild No Way Home theory about the X-Men is spreading online, and it's just ridiculous enough to work. Marvel's No Way Home trailers and clips tease a final battle taking place at the Statue of Liberty, which has a Captain America makeover. Of course, the Statue of Liberty was also the place of the final battle in X-Men. Due to No Way Home being about the Multiverse and Doctor Strange trying to hold back some Multiverse visitors in trailers, fans have been speculating that the final battle will bring the X-Men to the MCU. Though No Way Home's Statue of Liberty is the primary evidence for the theory, it's not entirely unfathomable.
Disney still hasn't officially introduced the X-Men to the MCU, and No Way Home provides a perfect opportunity. In the No Way Home trailers, Doctor Strange is clearly trying to hold back some unknown Multiverse force while at the Statue of Liberty. But the connection to the X-Men may go even further. After all, there are already rumors that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness could include X-Men characters. Since the Doctor Strange sequel follows the release of No Way Home, the Spider-Man movie could be a way to introduce the X-Men ahead of that film.
Though the No Way Home theory is possible, it's still a longshot. Plenty of films bring their conclusions to the Statue of Liberty. No Way Home and X-Men aren't even unique among superhero films, with 1983's Superman III notably including a Statue of Liberty scene. Additionally, No Way Home is already overstuffed with villains, and it may get overstuffed with heroes too. Leaks and rumors indicate that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield may reprise their Spider-Man roles in the movie. With so much going on already in Spider-Man: No Way Home, there may not be enough room to introduce characters from X-Men. So though the Statue of Liberty connection seems like a perfect storm, fans shouldn't necessarily count on seeing Storm.
